Emissary Quartet presents “Off the Map”

November 11, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm EST

Contemporary flute ensemble Emissary Quartet performs “Off the Map,” a concert featuring winning compositions from their international Call for Scores competition, on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7:30pm at the Norman S. Benzaquen Hall at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, 450 West 37th Street, New York, NY. The program features two world premieres and one American premiere of works for four flutes by Kai-Young Chan (based in Hong Kong), Karina Baras (Russia), and Sung-Hyun Yun (South Korea).  The winning works were among 190 total submissions to Emissary Quartet’s Call for Scores competition, which drew from composers from North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

“Off the Map” showcases the growing diversity of compositional voices in the flute quartet repertoire by juxtaposing the new pieces with well-established works by Friedrich Kuhlau, Pierre-Max Dubois, and Jennifer Higdon. The Call for Scores competition, launched in Jan. 2017 as part of the quartet’s ongoing efforts to expand the flute quartet repertoire, grew out of a belief that the creative possibilities of flute quartet are still not fully explored and developed.

Tickets are $20 general admission, $10 for patrons under 30, and are available at the door. There will be a free reception with the artists following the concert. The composers’ full statements about the new works are available at emissaryquartet.com.

Off the Map: Emissary Quartet was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from the Helen F. Whitaker Fund and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.
